ENGL 693 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "Tucked away in the Stoney Plain desert of New Mexico is a settlement of two families, one German and one American. Fearing for their lives, they fled from Danites of the Mormon church, living in complete seclusion for more than two decades. Their quiet existence is interrupted by the arrival of Gerald Leigh, who has veered off the regular trail on his way to seek his fortune. It is here that Leigh meets one of the daughters, a Jaguar tamer. Although she is attracted to him, he dares not commit himself to her for he is betrothed to a woman in California, for whom he has departed to seek his fortune. Meanwhile, Leigh’s fiancée, Blanche, is also traversing the desert. Her father, retired Major Heyward, is leading a group of miners prospecting for gold and silver. Despite warnings from an experienced trapper in their company, Major Heyward and his daughter fall prey to the deception of a renegade Frenchman and chief of a band of Apaches, who comes disguised as a soldier in the United States Army. This outlaw manages to capture Blanche, and he makes off with her towards his den on the other side of the Rio Grande. Leigh’s path intersects with the renegade when the Christians venture out of their settlement to satisfy the curiosity of the daughters. The jaguar queen determines to join Leigh’s rescue team and she risks her life to save Blanche from the hands of the outlaw."--Wanjugu W.
