ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: The Riflemen of the Miami, by Edward S. Ellis, takes place in the Ohio river valley. It centers around a group of 5 formidable hunters: Lewis “Lew” Dernor, George Dernor, Richard “Dick” Allmat, Tom O’Hara, and Ferdinand Sego. Lew is their fearless leader, ensuring that his men are ready for any adventure that comes their way. In their latest encounter they save Edith Sudbury, who has been captured by their mortal enemy, the Shawnee tribe. She is to be taken back to her village by the burly Smith brothers, Jim and Harry. However, all is not safe yet. The Riflemen find themselves face to face with a burning cabin, and happen upon Edith and the Smith brothers when they are attacked by a tribe. Meanwhile, Ferdinand is nowhere to be found, and a storm is brewing on the horizon. During the night, Lew and Edith split off so he can ensure her security in getting home. The remaining Riflemen (George, Dick, and Tom) are unsure of the path they took. They enlist the help of Oonamoo, a friendly Huron Indian, to find their friends before the final battle. This tale of love and war speaks to the human experience by demonstrating that, despite being faced with people and events that may threaten our survival, we are ultimately quite resilient and loyal to the end with those we care about most."--Veronica LeRoy, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
