ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "Red Hatchet is the primary protagonist of this dime novel: a textbook example of the “noble savage," who has allied himself with the British in colonial Canada. The story starts with a skirmish between Huron chief, Weasel, and his mortal enemy, Hatchet. Meanwhile, an envoy from the Iroquois named Carrington comes to the Hubbard residence. Mr. Hubbard’s daughter, Floy, is a great beauty and the subject of Carrington’s lust. Red Hatchet arrives later and warns the Hubbards that Weasel will soon exact his revenge. Weasel’s siege fails, but he frees Carrington, who is revealed to be a French assassin sent to kill Mr. Hubbard. Floy is captured, escapes, and is captured again by another chief named Flying Cloud, a notorious warrior known for his fighting prowess and leadership skills, and who used Weasel to secure his hostage. He fancies Floy and wants to make her his wife. Eventually, Flying Cloud turns on Weasel and humiliates him to such a degree that Red Hatchet agrees to set aside their differences to fight Flying Cloud together. Before his death, it is revealed that Flying Cloud is half Native and half white, having received a western education in France. Weasel sacrifices himself to get revenge on Carrington and Floy is rescued."--Michael Besonen, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
