ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: | "When Jeanette Barteau was four years old, she was brought by a stranger to a boarding school in barely-settled St. Louis. Nearly fourteen years later, she meets Jean Barteau for the first time. Barteau is a rough-and-tumble trapper, who Jeanette is certain cannot really be related to her, but nevertheless, the man claims to be her father. He quickly reveals his plan for Jeanette: she’ll provide for him in his old age by marrying the equally rich and despicable James Mussen. Terrified but resolute, Jeanette elopes that night with her lover, Henri Labardie, and they leave town with Barteau and Mussen hot on their heels. For five years, the Labardies flee from Barteau and Mussen, until Henri’s horse spooks in a snowstorm. The horse falls from a cliff and takes Henri with him...as well as their young daughter, Annette. Jeanette is left to forge ahead toward safety with only her guide and her son, Henri. A decade later, Jeanette believes that she’s made a new life for them with the childless Major and Mrs. Henning, away from the dangers of the old. Then, one afternoon, her son comes home with a strange story about a man who tried to carry him off into the woods when he heard Henri’s name, and the beautiful girl who was with him –- a girl, he says, with Jeanette’s eyes."--Kat Fiste, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018 |
