ENGL 330 Spring 2018's Thoughts: "While this novel takes place in the West and has many elements of a Western, it has much more in common with a mystery novel, with the underlying theme of revenge and justice. In the beginning of the text, we see a random white man coming to join the Dacotah tribe. There is also another group of people who live not far away, known as “Destroying Angels"--a mercenary subsection of a Mormon group. The leader wants to do away with a hunter who has joined the group, so he can claim the woman the man wants to marry. He plots to kill the hunter and seemingly gets away with it. Much of the novel focuses on the Mormon group and their plotting and scheming to capture the woman, Margaret, and kill the hunter. The novel is very suspenseful and has many plot twists that come out of nowhere. The text is a wonderful read for anyone who is highly interested in drama or mystery novels, especially ones with a more diverse plotline that focuses on more than one problem in the text. It can also be difficult to read, as women face harsh treatment, which paints a very negative portrayal of the Mormons. Despite this, the text shows a perspective than many typically do not think about, which only adds to the level of mystery and suspense that the novel has to offer."--Madison Hill, undergraduate student at NIU enrolled in ENGL 330, Spring 2018
