First Sentence: The tall, old-fashioned clock in the corner of the little school-room had just struck four, the children had all scampered away to their several homes, and Alma Preston, the village school-mistress, sat alone by the open window, gazing dreamily down the village street.
Last Sentence: The villagers say that she is hard-hearted and of a cold nature, but her actions belie their tongues, for every morning a fresh wreath of flowers is laid upon Paul Vernon's grave.
