Description: [Our readers, we are certain, will great with great pleasure Mrs. Holmes' new story, "Annie Graham's First Love." They were so deeply interested in "Rose Mather; or, What Women Can Do for the War," that they will be naturally anxious to know what became of the different characters. They will discover that it is a story complete in itself, with an entirely original plot, and many new characters, although it is a sequel to "Rose Mather; or, What Woman Can Do for the War."]
First Sentence: It was very lonely at the Mather mansion after the departure of the soldiers, and it required all Annie Graham's tact to keep Rose from sinking entirely under the sense of desolation which crept over her as she began more and more to realize what the war meant, and to tremble for the safety of her husband and her brothers.
