Notes: "This novel was not previously published by Beadle in America. It came out originally as a $400 prize serial in Snowden's Ladies' Companion for May, 1838, and was reprinted in the same journal several years later. In 1858, Peterson and Brother of Philadelphia published it in a somewhat expanded form as a book. Then came Beadle's reprint in 1862 in at least two different type wrappers, and in 1865 it showed up as a series in The Family Herald (London)."--Johannsen, A. House of Beadle and Adams
