First Sentence: It was near the close of a glorious summer's day in '49, that the crazy old ship in which I had embarked for the "El Dorado" of the Western world, sailed up the bay of San Francisco, and dropped her anchor before the modern Babel.
Last Sentence: The hardy miner, who now seeks wealth on the Feather River, must dig deep in the bowels of the earth for the glittering dust, or in the mountains dislodge the vast masses of gold-bearing quartz, with the aid of gunpowder, that efficient agent, which in '49 was used in California for little else than the destruction of human life.
