First Sentence: It was at the beginning of the year 1775-that eventful period in the history of American colonies, when the people, exasperated to the last degree by the tyrannical acts of George III, were fully determined to take up arms in defense of their liberties-that a party of sturdy farmers were grouped in conclave on a patch of green-sward, near a cottage situated on the roadside, near the town of Lexington.
